The close connection between the Jewish nation and the diamond & precious gems trade is no secret. As a nomadic nation that was often required to bundle all its possessions into a small space, precious gems were a smart solution. To this day, the word of the Jewish scholar, Maimonides ‘MAZAL’ is used to close diamond deals between merchants of all nations and religions around the world.
The Hebrew Bible consistently portrays gemstones as symbols of divine beauty, wisdom, and blessings. Whether adorning the High Priest’s breastplate, symbolizing the splendor of Eden, or describing the future restoration of Jerusalem, these stones hold deep spiritual significance, symbolizing divine favor, spiritual truths, and the richness of creation.
Despite the Jewish and Holy Land connection to precious gems – no one in documented history has ever tried to explore for precious gems deposits in the Land of Israel, especially in light of the geological information that was known about the area.
That is until 1988 – when the the Lubavitcher Rebbe (an orthodox Jewish spiritual leader, one of the most influential Jewish leaders of the 20th century) – in a meeting with the then mayor of Haifa Israel, chose to mention in passing something that have escaped the attention of those present in the meeting. Only afterwards people realized that the Rebbe spoke prophetically and said wondrous things: “…The uniqueness of Haifa is, that it has a sea and it has a valley – and in the valley are precious stones and gems. The Holy One, Blessed Be He, did a wondrous thing; he concealed them in the depths of the earth…”.
A Journey of Faith – By a Family of Pioneers
It was Mr. Avi Taub – who once exposed to the Rebbe’s words about the possibility of the existence of diamonds and precious gems deposits in the land of Israel – decided, with unwavering belief, devotion and vision, to embarked on a journey to uncover these treasures. Against all odds.
This strategic decision sent Avi to be the first in the world to open precious gems exploration and mining development in Israel by Shefa in Israel.
Avi was an Orthodox Jew, son of Holocaust survivors, third generation of diamond dealers and jewelers. The company was founded with the financial help of several faith-driven partners.
For over two decades, Mr. Taub and his family faced countless challenges. skeptics doubted, and obstacles seemed insurmountable, but their determination and faith never wavered.
Finally, in 2019, Mr. Taub’s unwavering faith led to the first ever discovery of a remarkable gem deposit in the land of Israel, in the biblical area of Zebulun tribe – a discovery that scientists and gemologists alike hailed as extraordinary.
Avi passed away sadly in October 28, 2019 at the early age of 68, but he left behind a professional and dedicated team who have worked with him for many years, and is honored to be able to bring his amazing pioneer vision to fulfilment.
Mining Miracles
Shefa in Israel is the only explorer and developer of precious gems deposits operating in Northern Israel, under exclusive exploration & prospecting Permits and Licenses from the supervisor of mines in the State of Israel, covering a total exploration area of about 470,000 Dunams in Northern Israel, mainly the Zebulun Vally and Mount Carmel.
Exploration activity is managed by professionally skilled and technically competent personnel with years of proven experience in their fields, and utmost care for responsible sourcing and environmental protection.
The most significant discoveries in Israel to date:
⭐ The Kishon Mine – an economic secondary deposit (alluvial) with a discovery certificate, discovered in 2019, and includes a rare variety of precious gemstones of various types, in an estimated quantity of 1.5 carats per ton. (read more).
⭐ The BTS Mine – an economic primary deposit (kimberlite) with an exploration license, discovered in 2022, and includes some of the gemstones also found in the Kishon, in an estimated quantity of approximately 150 carats per ton. (read more).
⭐Discovery of kimberlite rock – In 2004, the existence of kimberlite rock in the primary sources on Mount Carmel was discovered in collaboration with DE-BEERS. (read more).
⭐A new mineral to science – In 2018, the Carmel Sapphire, a special gemstone that exists only in Israel, was discovered, in collaboration with Mercury University in Australia. The mineral was named Mineral of the Year by the IMA, the International Mineralogical Association. (read more)
